International education experiences like study abroad and exchange programs offer students incredible opportunities to advance their degree and gain global experience while they explore a new culture. Though both types of programs allow students to go to another country and study at a foreign university, there are key differences in how study abroad and exchange programs approach academics, student support, and cultural experiences. Learning what sets these programs apart will help you decide which path is best suited to your academic and personal preferences—so let’s dive in!

Choose your international education experience—discover the differences between study abroad and exchange programs!

What is a Study Abroad Program?

Study abroad programs are academic experiences that allow students to enroll in courses at a foreign institution or university and earn credits towards their degree.

There are two main ways to study abroad:

  1. Direct enroll: Some schools allow students from a university abroad to directly enroll in their courses. Direct enrollment requires students to work with the international student office at the university where they want to study abroad, so they can enroll as a visiting student.
  2. Program provider: Program providers (like AIFS Abroad) offer study abroad programs around the world that students can apply for. Program providers work directly with host institutions and universities abroad, as well as liaise with U.S. institutions, to offer interested students a range of programs tailored to various personal and academic interests. Program providers may provide housing, group activities, and other inclusions, in addition to laying out which courses are available for them to enroll in.

Many students choose to use a program provider like AIFS Abroad so they don’t have to go through all of the administrative work required to direct enroll—it can take a lot of the stress out of planning! Additionally, students can greatly benefit from program inclusions such as on-site support, visa support, comprehensive insurance, housing, and more.

What is an Exchange Program?

An exchange program allows students from two partnered universities in different countries to swap students. For example, imagine you want to study abroad at a university in Berlin, such as Humboldt University of Berlin. If Humboldt University and your home university partnered for an exchange program, you could stay enrolled at your home university while you study at Humboldt University for a semester.

Study Abroad vs. Exchange Programs

Although both programs offer the amazing benefits of studying in another country and earning credits, each has distinct features. Here are some of the key differences between study abroad and exchange programs:

1. Availability

Many universities do not offer exchange programs. Exchange programs are more limited than study abroad programs and depend on your home university having an agreement with a foreign host university. This also means that the number of international destinations may also be highly limited.

Study abroad programs provide students access to countless destinations across the world. For example, AIFS Abroad offers access to programs in more than 30 international destinations. Additionally, AIFS Abroad partners with hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities to offer study abroad programs, meaning most students should be eligible, regardless of their home institution.

2. Enrollment

An advantage of exchange programs is the fact that students do not have to enroll with their host university abroad. Because of the partnership between the universities, they can take courses and earn credits without needing to transfer them.

Study abroad programs require you to enroll in courses at a host institution abroad—but it doesn’t need to be a complex process! For example, AIFS Abroad programs send transcripts directly to your home university from our school of record, Fairfield University, making transferring credits easy.

3. Experience

While study abroad and exchange programs may vary, study abroad experiences offer a wide range of course options, in addition to a more structured experience than exchange programs. Study abroad programs, like AIFS Abroad’s, can help students engage in meaningful cultural and social activities, take part in program-led excursions, receive professional development and career readiness opportunities, and more easily make friends with other students.

Interested in a study abroad experience? Choose one of AIFS Abroad’s amazing program options!

Which experience will you choose: an exchange program or a study abroad adventure? When you study abroad with AIFS Abroad, you can enjoy the inclusive benefits of on-site support, housing, comprehensive insurance, 24/7 emergency support, cultural and social activities, and day trips and excursions, allowing you to take your education abroad, without all the stress of planning.
