The given bar chart compares the proportion of households that owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, most owned houses recorded an upward trend in the percentage over the surveyed time frame within the highest figures in 2001, while the rented accommodation showed a downward trend throughout a ninety-third-year period. Additionally, households in owned accommodation initially had a lower rate, it outraced rented accommodation at the end of the period.

In 1918, approximately 75% of households in England and Wales lived in rented accommodation, while others who stayed in the rented apartments accounted for a third compared to the renters. Afterward, the proportion of rented properties experienced a dramatic drop of 25%. In addition, there had been a consistent rise in homeowners’ figures before intersecting each other at a half in 1971.

From 1971 onwards, home ownership witnessed a dramatic increase and reached a peak at nearly 70% before declining slightly by 4% in 2001. However, the proportion of renters saw an opposite tendency by experiencing a moderate fluctuation and going up to 35% in 2011.
