Molly: Business Internship in NYC

Meet Molly, a finance major from Miami University of Ohio, who spent the summer of her junior year doing a business internship at a luxury health spa in New York City.
For Molly, the experience was a perfect opportunity to see what living and working full-time in the city is like:
“I chose New York City because I love [this city]. I have visited a couple of times before and [this program] is just an amazing way for me to try living and working [here]. It’s been amazing. It’s been such a cool opportunity, and I’ve gotten to learn so many new things.”
AIFS Abroad programs include group activities and excursions that help participants connect with one another—and in a city like New York, there’s no shortage of ways to meet new people as an intern:
“On top of the friendships I’ve made through the program, being a part of clubs, gyms, and groups helps make it so much easier [to make friends] and you get to meet people with the same hobbies and interests!”
Anjini: Media Production Internship in NYC
Anjini, a film studies and creative writing student from Michigan State University, did a media production internship in New York City at a photo and video studio/event space, which she details below:

“I am interning… in Greenpoint (Brooklyn) [at] a photo and video and studio event space, so they shoot commercials there, magazine campaigns, and then in the event space people have parties, weddings, [and] short film screenings. My supervisors, [who are] the owners, also have their own independent projects and documentaries that they’re working on through the other studio that they own. So, I’ve been helping out with them for that stuff too.”
New York City is home to the largest and busiest subway system in North America, making it convenient and affordable to get around the city, visit other boroughs during free time, or commute to work like many New Yorkers do. As someone who wasn’t accustomed to using public transportation, Anjini quickly got comfortable with her commute on the subway:
“[Using the trains to commute to my internship is] surprisingly not that difficult at all! It did take a bit of getting used to… but after about a week or so you get a good idea of which trains will take you where—and you can always use google maps to check the train routes! And to be honest, it’s super fun to listen to music and ride the train to work.”
Why intern in New York City? Hear Anjini explain some of the benefits:
“I thought New York would be a super cool place to spend my summer (and I was right)… Honestly, [interning in New York City is] really awesome. You get the experience of [interning] in the field that you ideally hope to work in someday, you get to find out if that’s what really what you want, and you get to be in New York City… I promise it’s worth it!”
Arayo: Marketing Internship in NYC
Arayo from London spent a summer doing a marketing internship at a luxury lifestyle magazine based in New York City, which she describes in more detail below:
“[My host company] is a luxury lifestyle magazine that covers real estate, travel, dining, fashion, beauty, and anything that your average person is into.”

Many of Arayo’s day-to-day responsibilities provided valuable hands-on professional experience, helping her expand her skillset and build her resume. Below, she lists some of her duties as a marketing intern in New York:
“Researching and compiling a list of advertising rep firms in Europe… Scheduling posts on all social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) for the month of July…. Working on researching more companies in Germany, Dubai, and Russia.”
Reflecting on her experience, Arayo shares the impact of interning in New York City:
“Some of the people I’ve met in New York are people I know that I would not necessarily meet in London… or even people that are into the same things that I am, so I am really grateful for [this] opportunity… to be able to flourish and also learn a lot more about [myself]… This experience has been truly invaluable, and I know I’ve learned so many transferrable skills I’m going to continue to apply for the rest of my life. I’ve learned so much about myself, met amazing people, and overall, I’m just so grateful.”
For anyone interning in New York City in the future, Arayo predicts the following:
“You’re going to learn so much and you’re also going to have so much fun. You’re going to meet amazing people…”
