Mastering if clause conditional sentences is a powerful way to impress examiners in the IELTS test because they will be looking for evidence of your ability to use a mix of grammatical structures. 

The First, Second, and Third Conditionals allow you to answer questions flexibility as you can use them to explain real possibilities, imagine hypothetical situations, and reflect on past events with accuracy. 

Let’s now look at examples for each one so you can see how they can potentially be used in the test. Each example is then followed by a brief explanation video. 

The First Conditional

Form: If + Present Simple, will + verb

👉 Why it helps: Shows ability to express future predictions and consequences.

💡 Speaking Example (Part 1)

  • Q: What are you studying at the moment?
  • A: I’m studying English at a local college. But if I get the IELTS score I want, I’ll apply for a master’s degree abroad.

💡 Writing Example (Task 2)

  • Topic: Some people think technology will replace teachers.
  • Possible sentence in essay: If schools rely only on technology, students will miss out on personal interaction with teachers.

The Second Conditional 

Form: If + Past Simple, would + verb

👉 Why it helps: Shows ability to discuss imaginative, unlikely or impossible situations logically.

💡 Speaking Example (Part 1)

  • Q: If you could change one thing about your hometown, what would it be?
  • A: If I had the chance, I would build more parks because people need green spaces to relax.

💡 Writing Example (Task 2)

  • Topic: Some believe rich countries should help poorer ones.
  • Possible sentence in essay: If wealthy nations invested in education abroad, they would reduce poverty in the long term.

The Third Conditional 

Form: If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle

👉 Why it helps: Shows you can handle complex grammar structures and reflect on past mistakes, regrets, or alternative outcomes.

💡 Speaking Example (Part 3)

  • Q: Do you think your country should have invested more in public transport?
  • A: Yes, if the government had spent more money earlier, we would have fewer traffic problems today.

💡 Writing Example (Task 2)

  • Topic: Some people say governments failed to prepare for climate change.
  • Possible sentence in essay:: If leaders had acted sooner, we would have avoided some of the current environmental crises.
