If you are aiming for a high band score in IELTS Writing and IELTS Speaking, you need to minimise the number of errors you are making. If you make more than “occasional” errors, then your band score will probably be limited to Band 6 at best.

Many test takers confuse the words “fewer” and “less”. (In fact, many native speakers sometimes do this as well!) So it is important to know the difference between these two words.

In this video, test your ability to use “fewer” and “less”, then learn how to use them correctly. Then test yourself with the practice exercise below the video.

less

Use “less” with uncountable nouns.

  • less water
  • less money
  • less time

fewer

Use “fewer” with countable nouns.

  • fewer problems
  • fewer people
  • fewer children

Practice Exercise

Now take the practice exercise! Can you identify all 10 correct sentences? Good luck!
