How do you teach students that measles isn’t just “a childhood rash”? That it can erase years of immune memory—and even lead to serious complications like brain inflammation?

Meet Maddie, the fictional but research-based subject of a new classroom case study. This resource brings science to life through narrative, helping students understand the biology of measles, the importance of immune memory, and the history of the measles vaccine.

🧠 What’s in the Case Study?

The case follows a young girl through a real-world sequence of illness, immune system response, long-term consequences, and eventual recovery. Along the way, students learn:

  • How the immune system responds to the measles virus
  • What immune amnesia is, and why it makes measles so dangerous
  • The early symptoms and progression of measles
  • A serious complication: encephalitis and brain inflammation
  • The history and importance of the MMR vaccine

This narrative approach goes beyond textbook definitions, making the science personal and relevant. Students will think critically, analyze medical information, and connect individual health decisions to public health outcomes.

📚 What’s Included?

  • A fully illustrated case study in narrative form
  • Comprehension questions for each section
  • A free response writing prompt with rubric
  • Answer key is available at TpT
syringe

I created this case study for my anatomy class, to be used in the unit on cell biology, though you could use it in Immune System Unit. All my anatomy units, with downloadable worksheets are available at Biologycorner.com/anatomy. My anatomy class has a regular section and an honors section; and I usually only assign the essay portion to the honors students.

This case can also be combined with discussions on public health and vaccines. I plan to pair it with recent reports on measles outbreaks.
