Student Ambassador Motunrayo Ogunsugba shares reflections on life in Ireland as an international student, offering personal insights on building community, exploring new places, and staying connected to home through food and culture.

Building a Life Abroad | Study in Ireland2024 has come and gone, and 2025 is well underway. A new year always brings fresh hope and excitement for the possibilities ahead. Last year was my first full calendar year in Ireland, and it came with its fair share of ups and downs. As I look forward to what is next, I have been reflecting on the lessons I have learned and I am determined to make my second year in Ireland even more memorable.

One of my biggest goals for this year is to become even more engaged on the University College Dublin (UCD) campus. Thinking back on the past year, many of my best experiences happened because I was active in different societies and clubs across campus. I was able to make new friends and establish a community of my own, which I believe is incredibly important for any international student. These experiences also helped me build a strong personal and professional network, which I hope will continue to grow during 2025.

Another priority for me is to explore more of Ireland’s natural beauty. I am really passionate about nature photography, so I plan to travel more across the country, especially to Galway, Wexford, Sligo and Clare. Ireland’s public transport system is reliable and easy to navigate, which makes it simple to move between counties. The people are also genuinely friendly and often eager to share the stories behind local landmarks and traditions. I will be sharing some of my favourite shots from last year, and I am hoping to capture even more stunning moments in the months ahead.

A major challenge I faced last year was homesickness, especially missing the comfort of familiar food. But thanks to some adventures with friends, I discovered several African shops and restaurants around Dublin. Now I can recreate meals that make me feel close to home. This year, I plan to cook lots of Nigerian food, and I would also love to explore dishes from other cultures, especially Korean and Thai cuisine, which are easy to find in the city.

My first year in Ireland was a good one, and I know that with a more open and confident mindset, the journey ahead can be even better. I encourage all international students to embrace new experiences and step outside their comfort zones. It is the best way to make your time in Ireland truly unforgettable.
