Want to hear from a college student who did a study abroad program in Spain? We recently caught up with Valeria from Texas A&M International University, who spent her summer studying abroad in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Read on to learn more about Valeria’s experience with AIFS Abroad and what it’s like being an international student in Madrid.

Choosing a Study Abroad Program Destination & Term

Deciding when and where to study abroad isn’t easy for some students (our team can help with that!), especially when you consider all the incredible programs AIFS Abroad has to offer. Fortunately, each of our programs provides unforgettable experiences that can transform your personal and academic future, no matter where you go.  As for Valeria, here’s how she knew Madrid was right for her:

“I chose to study abroad in Madrid, Spain, because I wanted to experience life in a city that blends a rich cultural history with a modern, energetic atmosphere. Madrid has an amazing balance of art, food, and community. There’s always something happening… I would definitely recommend it to others because it’s a place where you can easily connect with people, explore different parts of Spain, and really feel part of the local culture.”

For college students like Valeria who find it difficult to coordinate studying abroad during the school year, a summer program is a great solution:

“I chose to study abroad during the summer because it worked best with my schedule. [Plus,] the summer vibe was full of energy, people spent time outdoors, [and] there were tons of cultural events and festivals… Even with the heat, it was a fun and exciting time to explore the city.”

Academics Abroad

When you study abroad, you get to take courses in a totally new academic environment. You can learn from professors with different cultural perspectives, study with other students from across the world or the U.S., and start viewing your studies through a new, broader lens. Hear Valeria describe her experience at her host university in Madrid:

“I studied at Universidad de Nebrija in Madrid, and I really enjoyed the learning environment there. The campus was beautiful, easy to navigate, and had a welcoming atmosphere. The professors were very knowledgeable and approachable, which made classes engaging and interactive. I also appreciated how the university blended academic learning with local culture; it really helped me feel connected to life in Madrid.”

Among all of her classes, one stuck out the most:

“I took an International Management class, which counted toward my major. It was one of my favorite courses because it gave me a deeper understanding of how…cultural differences affect management styles and communication. The real-world examples and discussions helped me think more critically about international business and prepared me for future career opportunities.

The classes were smaller and more discussion-based than what I’m used to at home… There was a stronger emphasis on participation and real-life applications rather than just lectures or exams.”

AIFS Abroad Trips & Activities

AIFS Abroad programs include trips and excursions as well as social and cultural activities. These inclusions help students learn more about their program destination, travel around their host city or country, enjoy authentic cultural experiences, and connect with other students in their program. Valeria explains some of her favorite trips and activities below:

“I was so amazed by all the excursions and activities that AIFS provided for us, like the paella cooking class, flamenco class, and museum visits. Each one gave us a deeper look into Spanish culture and made learning outside the classroom so much fun. My favorite, though, was the day trip to Toledo. The city was absolutely beautiful with its historic architecture, narrow streets, and incredible views. It was fascinating to learn about its mix of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim influences, and it really felt like stepping back in time.”

Making Friends Abroad

Whether you study abroad with friends or go solo, you’ll have plenty of chances to meet new people and make lifelong “amigos.” This is what making friends in Madrid looked like for Valeria:

“I knew a couple of girls from my home university before the program, but we weren’t very close at the time. Studying abroad together really helped us bond and grow our friendship, which was one of the best parts of the experience. I also made a lot of new friends from my classes! Everyone was friendly, open, and excited to explore Madrid together.”

Cultural Appreciation Abroad

Students who study abroad sometimes experience culture shock. While it can be a bit different for everyone, it’s a natural part of adjusting to a new cultural environment and fades as you get comfortable in your host city. For Valeria, her initial culture shock transformed into an appreciation for the Spanish way of life:

“I didn’t experience major culture shock, but there were definitely small differences that took some getting used to. For example, the slower pace of life in Spain, later mealtimes, and how social interactions often lasted much longer than I was used to at home. At first, it felt a little different to adjust my routine, but I quickly grew to love it.

One thing I really admired about Spanish culture, especially in Madrid, was how much people value enjoying the moment and spending time with others… It reminded me how important it is to slow down and appreciate everyday life instead of always rushing. I definitely want to bring that mindset home with me! Taking more time to be present, enjoy good company, and not stress so much about being constantly busy.”

Plus, when you study abroad, you truly get to immerse yourself in the local way of life, which, in Madrid, means enjoying some delicious dishes and late-night hangs:

“My favorite cultural experience while abroad was simply living like a local in Madrid. I loved spending time at cafés, trying new foods like tapas and churros con chocolate, and seeing how people gathered to socialize late into the evening.”

Housing

AIFS Abroad programs include safe and central housing, making it easy to get to campus, or, in the case of intern abroad programs, your internship site. Valeria lived in a shared apartment with other AIFS Abroad participants, which she describes below:

“I lived in a shared apartment, and it was a great experience. The location was awesome! We were within walking distance of coffee shops, stores, and lots of fun places to explore. I lived with other students from my home university, which made it easy to settle in and feel comfortable right away. It was the perfect balance between independence and having a supportive community around me.”

Final Thoughts from Valeria

After reflecting on her study abroad program in Madrid, Valeria leaves us with these final thoughts:

“Studying abroad in Madrid was truly one of the best experiences of my life. It allowed me to grow personally, academically, and professionally while discovering a new culture and forming lifelong friendships. The memories, lessons, and perspectives I gained will stay with me forever, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity. I would encourage anyone considering studying abroad to take the leap! It’s an experience that changes you in all the best ways.”
