Have you ever wondered whether there is a distinction between the pronunciations of letters “B” and “V”? If so, then today’s blog is for you! Watch the video below to learn how these two letters should be pronounced in Spanish.

Video transcription and translation

Why do we have two letters for the same sound that sometimes confuses us when writing?

Many of you have asked us about the ‘V’ and the ‘B’ or, as they say in some countries, ‘Ve baja‘, ‘Ve corta’ or ‘Ve chica‘ and ‘Be alta‘ or ‘Be larga‘.

Por ejemplo, ¿cómo dirías “bienvenidos”, “ambivalente”? ¡Exacto!

For example, how would you say “bienvenidos”, “ambivalente”? Exactly! In the Spanish language, there is no difference in the pronunciation of these letters.

Both represent this ‘B’ sound, which is called sonorous bilabial.

Although you may have heard the pronunciation of the ‘V’ with this other ‘V’ sound which is called labiodental.

This ‘V’ may appear in some areas of Spain, such as Valencia or Mallorca, due to the influence of their regional languages.

It can also appear in some places of the American continent due to its proximity to Amerindian languages.

But we could say that the existence of these two letters is due to a matter of tradition.

In Latin they represented different sounds and that is why the Spanish orthography kept them.

Looking back in history, the letter ‘V’ is related to the Latin ‘U’, which in turn derives from the Greek upsilon, while ‘B’ comes from the Greek letter beta.

With the passage of time, these two letters represented the same sound, but the confusion with their pronunciation is not new, it dates back to medieval Spanish.

In fact, between the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, several editions of Spanish orthography and grammar described and even recommended the pronunciation of ‘V’ as labiodental.

Why? Well, because the experts thought it was convenient to distinguish it from the ‘B’, as was the case in several European languages, including French, Portuguese and English, which were very influential at the time.

But this was eliminated in 1911, when the Real Academia Española stopped recommending it and since then both letters are said the same, officially speaking.

¿Cómo lo ves?

What do you think?
