Worksheet on expanded form and short form helps students understand place value by practicing numbers in expanded form and short form. It includes simple and engaging questions where learners break numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones, and also combine expanded numbers to form standard numbers. This worksheet builds strong number sense and improves confidence in reading and writing numbers.
What Is Expanded Form in Math?
Expanded form of a number is the sum of the place values of its digits.
Look at the given examples.
145 = 1 hundred + 4 tens + 5 ones = 100 + 40 + 5
182 = 1 hundred + 8 tens + 2 ones = 100 + 80 + 2
105 = 1 hundred + 5 ones = 100 + 5
193 = 1 hundred + 9 tens + 3 ones = 100 + 90 +3
What Is Short Form in Math?
To write the short form of an expanded number, we write the face value of each digit in the correct place.
Look at the given example.

The place value of 1 is 1 hundred. So, we write 1 at the hundreds place.
The place value of 2 is 2 tens. So, we write 2 at the tens place.
The place value of 8 is 8 ones. So, we write 8 at the ones place.
Similarly,
100 + 6 = 106
100 + 80 + 6 = 186
Quick Tip:
We can write a number in three different forms.
