The October 20, 2025 GEG Instructional Coaches meeting brought together educators from around the globe to explore the exciting new AI capabilities in Google Classroom and discuss how instructional coaches can leverage these tools to support both teachers and students.
What’s New: AI-Powered Features in Google Classroom
Google has introduced powerful new AI features in Classroom that are changing the game for educators:
- Practice Sets with AI-generated questions: Teachers can now quickly create adaptive practice activities that provide personalized feedback to students
- Quiz Import from PDFs and Docs: Transform existing materials into interactive assessments with just a few clicks
- Class Summary feature: Get instant insights into student progress and identify where learners need additional support
These features are now available for Google Workspace for Education Plus users with Gemini add-ons.
Gemini for Teens: Expanding AI Access Responsibly
A major announcement discussed at the meeting was Google’s rollout of Gemini access for students ages 13-17 in Workspace for Education accounts. This represents a significant shift in how AI can be integrated into educational settings while maintaining appropriate safeguards.
Key considerations for implementation include:
- Using organizational units (OUs) to control access by grade level
- Developing comprehensive AI policies at the district level
- Creating tiered approaches for different age groups and tools
Real-World Applications for Instructional Coaches
Meeting participants shared innovative ways they’re using AI tools to support teachers in their daily practice. The discussion highlighted both practical applications and creative implementations that are making a real difference in schools.
Differentiation Support
Instructional coaches are using Gemini to help teachers quickly adapt content for different reading levels and learning needs. This includes:
- Adjusting text complexity for diverse learners within the same classroom
- Creating multiple versions of assignments to meet IEP and 504 accommodations
- Generating scaffolded instructions that break down complex tasks into manageable steps
- Translating materials for multilingual learners while maintaining academic rigor
Lesson Planning and Curriculum Development
AI tools are streamlining the lesson planning process by:
- Generating thought-provoking discussion questions aligned to learning objectives
- Creating structured learning activities with clear success criteria
- Developing formative assessment items that check for understanding
- Suggesting real-world connections and examples to make content more relevant
- Providing ideas for extension activities for advanced learners
Professional Development and Coaching Resources
Coaches are leveraging AI to enhance their own effectiveness:
- Using NotebookLM to transform meeting notes and transcripts into actionable coaching resources
- Creating personalized professional development materials tailored to individual teacher needs
- Developing observation protocols and feedback templates
- Generating coaching conversation starters and reflection prompts
- Building resource libraries organized by topic, grade level, or instructional strategy
Time-Saving Administrative Tasks
Participants also discussed how AI helps with the administrative side of coaching:
- Summarizing lengthy policy documents or educational research into digestible formats
- Drafting communication to teachers, administrators, and families
- Creating agendas and follow-up materials for professional learning communities
- Organizing and categorizing teacher requests and coaching priorities
