Interested in studying or interning abroad in the fall but don’t want to miss out on the colorful foliage that you love? What if we told you that breathtaking autumn colors can be found around the world, often right near popular study abroad destinations? Below, we’ll dive into some of the best spots for fall foliage around the world, and where you can study or intern abroad to witness them!

From golden forests to colorful cityscapes, discover the best places to see fall foliage around the world with AIFS Abroad.

Bavaria, Germany

Located in the southeast of Germany, bordering both the Czech Republic and Austria, Bavaria is Germany’s largest state and an unbeatable location for fall foliage. Bavaria is a famous cultural hotspot, featuring iconic castles like Neuschwanstein, a deep-rooted cultural heritage including Oktoberfest, folk clothing like Lederhosen and Drindl, and the delicious Bavarian pretzel.

While the state may be best known for its cultural traditions, it’s also renowned for stunning fall foliage. Bavaria is a nature-lover’s paradise, and during autumn, it comes alive with bursts of bright orange, red, and yellow. Venture to this region for views of multi-colored forests flooded with the vibrancy of sycamores, beeches, and oaks, as they prepare for the winter. Study or intern abroad in Berlin, Salzburg, or Prague during the fall to get easy access to this autumnal dreamscape!

The Alps: France, Austria, and Italy

Austria, France, and Italy all offer access to unique regions of the world-famous Alps, many of which provide incredible opportunities for enjoying autumn foliage.

Grenoble: Chartreuse Mountains

Part of the French Prealps, the Chartreuse Mountains are found in southeastern France, just west of the larger French Alps. At the foot of these mountains is the city of Grenoble, the perfect launching point to enjoy the wealth of fall foliage that cover the French Prealps, along with spectacular lookouts over open pastures, nearby peaks, and notable landmarks, including Mont Blanc and the monastery of the Grand Chartreuse.

This captivating section of the Alps isn’t just home to beautiful views, but also an interesting history. In 1084, a group of monks wishing to emulate the early Christian hermits started a small community in the Chartreuse Mountains. For this reason, we recommend these mountains to those in search of quiet contemplation, amid spirited autumn colors.

Salzburg: Austrian Alps

The Austrian Alps offer a range of year-round outdoor activities, but the fall season is truly an extraordinary time to visit, due to the awesome opportunities for leaf peeping. The canopies of golden maples spread like crested waves on a yellow sea throughout the valleys, while amber larches explode with color across the mountainsides—turning green alpine areas into bright fireworks of color.

Study abroad in Salzburg and you can see the fall colors wash over the Austrian Alps from the comfort of the city. Make the birthplace of Mozart your home base as you explore alpine lakes framed by fall foliage, including the famous Hallstatt, a 16th-century village straight out of a fairytale.

Milan: The Dolomites

South of Salzburg and the Austrian Alps, you’ll find the Dolomite Alps of Italy, which are known for their dramatic rock formations and impressive bald summits. While many of the trees in the Dolomites do not lose their needles during the fall, the golden larch is a miraculous, coniferous exception. As the name suggests, these larches turn yellow in autumn, creating a striking contrast against the spectacular rocky peaks that loom above. Consider a hike around sunrise or sunset to see the famous alpenglow that sets these trees ablaze during dawn and dusk—it’s truly a sight to behold!

For easy access to the Dolomites and their autumnal wonder, you should study or intern abroad in Milan during the fall semester. Day trips to the Dolomites are easily accessible from this metropolitan city; plus, Milan also offers nearby access to the Swiss Alps via the Bernina Red Train for even more breathtaking views of the mountains!

Loire Valley, France

When we think of leaf peeping, we typically think of trees, but this isn’t always the case. In the Loire Valley of France, the vineyards take center stage, transforming the rolling hills into a mosaic of gold, crimson, and deep burgundy, a landscape so beautiful it belongs in the Louvre.

Located about 3 hours from Paris, the Loire Valley is a superb place for a day trip or weekend excursion during your study abroad program or international internship in France’s capital. While you’re there, you can visit the vineyards, finding beauty in both taste and sight, and see the hundreds of castles that give this region its name, the “Valley of Kings.”

Prague, Czech Republic

Want to see beautiful fall foliage without leaving the city? Prague may be your ideal fall destination. The combination of Gothic spires, red-bricked roofs, and brightly colored trees growing along the Vltava River and branching out above cobblestone streets makes the Czech capital city a perfect place for witnessing some amazing fall foliage.

Visit Petřín Tower for views over the “City of a Hundred Spires” and admire how the red roofs complement the crimson of maples and oaks along the city streets. Explore historic sites like the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle with the added atmosphere that comes with this enchanting season. Fall semester in Prague is a must-see for anyone who wants to learn what happens when medieval architecture meets gorgeous fall foliage.

Lillafüred & Budapest, Hungary

Study abroad in Budapest and gain access to the Hungarian countryside, which transforms into an autumnal wonderland in October. Two hours from the city is the small town of Lillafüred, nestled in a cozy forest. Here you can see yellows, reds, and oranges amid rolling hills, go for hikes to magical caves and waterfalls, or take a boat ride along the lake.

Back in the capital of Hungary, you can enjoy some pleasant walks below the changing canopies of the trees. See new colors emerge around historic sites like Buda Castle or take to the skies in a hot air balloon for a view of the city and Hungarian countryside that’s hard to beat!

Connemara & Wicklow National Parks, Ireland

Autumn transforms the Emerald Isle into a mosaic of colors. Irish heather blooms and turns to gold, while old-growth forests become the stuff of fairytales. Combined with the lower angle of sunlight illuminating quartzite-topped mountains and cozy pastures, it’s no wonder Ireland is such a fantastic place for a fall semester abroad.

Connemara National Park

Connemara National Park is located on the west coast of Ireland near Galway. This National Park offers spectacular views of scenic mountains, grasslands, and the Atlantic Ocean year-round, but it’s truly something to behold in autumn. The heather that covers the grasslands and hills turns a flaxen yellow, giving it the name “golden heath.” Connemara is the perfect place to see some unique fall foliage and inspiring natural landscapes for anyone studying or interning abroad in nearby Galway or Limerick.

Wicklow National Park

Want to see some autumn leaves while studying abroad in Dublin or Maynooth? Wicklow National Park is just a short trip from both program destinations. This natural area offers sprawling forests among serene mountains that become a patchwork of color during autumn. Within Wicklow is Glendalough, a particularly popular place to visit in autumn. Here, you can see beautiful fall colors in valleys with medieval monastic settlements and ancient trees, transporting you back to a different era—a time when fairies were said to roam these mystical woods.

The Highlands, Scotland

Pack your bags for the U.K. if you’re looking for idyllic views and golden hues among rugged mountains, picturesque lochs, and ancient, crumbling castles. The Scottish Highlands is a historic area of northern Scotland that is sparsely populated and rich in autumn views—perfect for those seeking natural beauty.

During autumn, you can see glens covered with multi-colored heather and a sea of crimson and copper washing over these ancient and mystical mountains. It’s truly an otherworldly spectacle that you have to see to believe. For those studying abroad in Dublin or London, the Highlands can be reached on weekend trips or holidays, offering the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Lake District National Park, England

Looking for some fall foliage a bit closer to London while you study or intern abroad? The Lake District National Park in England is a great place to see autumn foliage and isn’t as far north as the Highlands. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it perfect for immersing yourself in the local culture while spying some awe-inspiring landscapes.

See woodlands come alive with fiery silver birch and yellow larch amid idyllic valleys, rushing rivers, and, of course, stunning lakes. As England’s largest national park, there are endless areas and footpaths to explore, whether you want a rugged hike into the mountains or a leisurely stroll by the water. Study or intern abroad in London and you’ll have the Lake District within reach on weekends—where crisp air, the satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot, and glassy lakes reflecting bright foliage make for unforgettable autumn adventures.

Seoraksan National Park, South Korea

Looking for fall foliage outside of Europe? Seoraksan National Park in South Korea is an exceptional option. This natural area is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its rich biodiversity, which includes thousands of plant and animal species. Located just over two hours from South Korea’s capital, it’s the perfect place to see some stunning fall foliage if you’re studying or interning abroad in Seoul!

Climb Mt. Seorak during the fall months for views of scarlet maples and yellow gingkos reaching out towards the stony ridgelines that this national park is famous for. Not big on hiking? No problem—there’s a cable car that can take you high up into the mountains for some unforgettable autumn views. Near the cable car, you’ll find the Sinheungsa Temple, a Buddhist place of worship you can visit and learn more about Korean culture, all while you admire how the traditional architecture complements the natural beauty surrounding it.

Patagonia, Argentina

Want to see fall foliage during the spring semester? That’s right, if you study or intern abroad in the southern hemisphere in Buenos Aires, Argentina, you can enjoy the autumn season (and all the fall foliage that comes with it) while it’s still spring back in the U.S.!

Take a trip to Patagonia in March or April, when the region’s legendary landscapes erupt with the colors of fall. Hike into the Andes to find lakes mirroring fiery reds and yellows. In the southern Andes, you can find El Chaltén, where vibrant trees frame rushing waterfalls and dramatic snow-capped peaks. Study or intern abroad in Buenos Aires during spring semester, and you can experience autumn twice in one year.
