This line graph illustrates the percentage of people living in cities in four Asian countries— the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia— from 1970 to 2020, with additional projections for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, the proportion of individuals residing in urban areas showed a consistent increase throughout the period. Moreover, Malaysia had the highest percentage of urban dwellers, making it the most popular country for city living. In contrast, Indonesia experienced the lowest proportion of its population living in cities.
In 1970, the Philippines, followed by Malaysia, had the highest percentage of urban population, with approximately 30% in both countries. Malaysia maintained a gap of roughly 10% to 15% over the Philippines. Over the following years, the percentage of city dwellers in Malaysia and Indonesia experienced a sharp increase, reaching over 80% and 60%, respectively, by the end of the period. However, the urban population in both the Philippines and Thailand grew more gradually, rising to around 50% by 2040.
