A new school year means a new classroom — or a chance to give your current set-up a refresh! How you set up your room can help you stay organized, make expectations clear to students, and create a comfortable and exciting learning environment for your class. Being intentional with bulletin board ideas and classroom decor choices can help support student growth and truly deepen learning experiences.

Whether you’re looking for new ways to decorate your classroom or searching for something you can use year after year, get your space ready with these easy bulletin board ideas and classroom decorations.

Unique Bulletin Board Ideas

Get your class excited about learning with unique bulletin board ideas they’ve never seen before. From back-to-school bulletin board ideas to topical concept bulletin board ideas, you’re only limited by the collective creativity of teachers around the world.

  • Growing Word Wall: When students have extra time after an activity or assignment, have them draw and color a word that represents their feelings that day. Add these to your word wall bulletin board over a week, a month, or a year.
  • Class Timeline: Create a timeline bulletin board specific to your class that highlights important events from the years they were born, the year they entered your class, and even predictions for the year they graduate.
  • Custom Comic Strip: Create a background that looks like a blank comic strip. Have students collectively create a story from start to finish. To keep it focused, ask them to expand on a topic you’re currently covering, and assign teams for the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
  • Rube Goldberg Machine: Use tubes and other 3D objects to create a Rube Goldberg machine on your bulletin board that gets a ping pong ball into a basket.
  • Curriculum Countdown: Write each unit for your curriculum on a separate sticky note. Stick all the notes to your bulletin board in order. As your class completes a unit, let a student remove that note from the board.
  • Portrait Mosaic: Use small photos of the students in your class to create a larger image. Print the photos in different grayscale shades to help your larger image come to life.
  • Reward Yourself: Create a bunch of awards for positive little things a student might do in a school day and hang them all over your board. Encourage students to take an award they feel they earned that day.
  • Book Club Grab Bag: Hang a bag on your bulletin board that contains small laminated replicas of book covers for the books your class could read. Each month, have one student draw a book from the bag and stick it on the board. This is the book the class will read for the month.
  • Who Said That?: Keep a running list of funny or inspirational things students in your class say for the first couple of months of the year. Add these to your bulletin board with movable name tags, so students can have fun matching the classmate with the saying.
  • Passing the Pencil: Have each student write a note that starts with “I’m passing the pencil to someone who…” and ends with something nice or encouraging they know about the classmate they are assigned. Arrange these on the board with a pencil between each note to serve as an arrow from one to the next.

Lead with learning objectives bulletin boards

Bulletin board designs should be visually appealing, but they can also be useful. Set the tone for your students’ day by letting them know what they’ll learn as soon as they enter the room.
